Built for people who show up.

Granite opened in 2023 on Foundry St. The idea was simple: a serious gym without the ego. Still is.

The gym

Why we built it.

Granite founder in front of the bouldering wall

Portland had gyms. Portland didn’t have a gym that took both disciplines equally seriously. Most bouldering gyms treat the strength area as an afterthought. Most lifting facilities treat climbers like they’re in the wrong building.

We started with a simple spec: 16-ft walls with quality setting, a full rack room, platforms for real lifts, and a sauna because recovery matters. 14,000 sq ft on Foundry St in the Pearl. Opened January 2023.

The name came from the material. Granite doesn’t flex. Neither does our approach to the gym. Problems are set by people who climb at a high level. The strength programming is written by someone who also coaches. Nothing on the menu is half-hearted.

We keep the gym clean, the music at a reasonable volume, and the attitude absent. You’re here to train. So are we.

“The goal is a gym with problems worth solving and equipment worth training on.”
Route setting

Six-week reset cycle.

Every problem on the wall has a six-week lifespan. We strip, we set, we grade, we open. Here’s how it works.

Wk 1–2 Setting crew strips the designated wall section. Old holds cleaned, sorted, and inspected. New holds ordered or pulled from storage based on the session’s planned grade distribution.
Wk 3 Problems set. Each setter works independently and then reviews other setters’ work. We aim for a mix: physical, technical, reachy, compression, coordination. No two problems in the same grade cluster should feel the same.
Wk 4 Test session. The full crew climbs every problem and grades by consensus. Problems that aren’t working get rebuilt. Grades that feel off get adjusted. Holds that rattle get replaced.
Wk 5 Soft open. Problems go live with provisional grades. Members can flag inconsistencies at the desk. We adjust for the first week based on real feedback from climbers across ability levels.
Wk 6 Grades finalized. Tracking board updated. Reset dates for the next cycle posted. The cycle restarts. We try not to repeat ourselves.

Reset schedule is posted at the desk and on @granite.gym.

Gym rules

What we expect.

Short list. Applies to everyone including staff.

  • 01
Don’t spray beta uninvited. If someone is working a problem, they didn’t ask for your sequence. Wait until they ask or step off.
  • 02
Brush holds if you’re sweating on them. Chalk brushes are at every station. Use them before you get back on the wall.
  • 03
Check the fall zone before you get on. Look where you’ll land. Move your bag. Make sure no one is standing underneath you.
  • 04
Take turns on popular problems. Sitting on a problem during peak hours holds up the whole session. Rest on the ground.
  • 05
Keep shoes off the mats until you’re climbing. Rubber soles off the crash pads except when you’re on the wall.
  • 06
Wipe down equipment after lifting. Chalk bags, bars, cable handles. Same expectation on the strength floor as on the walls.
